After More Than 5 Years, Chely Wright Brings New Music Into the World

It’s been more than five years since Chely Wright released new music. The “Single White Female” singer has returned—with the help of her fans—to deliver her latest project, I Am The Rain.

Chely_Wright_Albumcover_I_Am_Rain“I believe I’ve given birth to a beautiful new baby,” Chely said in a statement. “And I would like people who see my baby to think it’s beautiful too. That’s how much this new music means to me. I am so very lucky it all came true.”

Chely’s latest effort was funded in large part with the help of a Kickstarter campaign—an online crowdfunding website—she began in 2014. The campaign became the No. 1 most funded country music Kickstarter project to date, raising $247,181.

Produced by award-winning producer Joe Henry (Bonnie Raitt), I Am The Rain is the follow-up to her 2010 album, Lifted Off the Ground. The new project has guest appearances by Emmylou Harris, the Milk Carton Kids and Rodney Crowell, who co-wrote “At the Heart of Me” with Chely and producer Joe Henry.

“Making this record was—in equal measure—it was stressful and emotional and difficult. In equal measure it was enlightening, fun, exciting. It was a roller coaster for sure but it was as fun as it was emotional and difficult to make.”

Chely Wright made headlines in 2010 when she released her autobiography, Like Me, admitting—after years of speculation—that she was gay. The singer has since become an advocate and spokesperson for LGBT rights and married her girlfriend Lauren Blitzer, a civil rights activist, in 2011. The two now have three-year-old twin boys, George and Everett.

I Am The Rain will be available September 9. Watch Chely give a behind-the-scenes look at the making of her new album.
