To some people, a “Sober Saturday Night” sounds like an unrealistic goal for the weekend. For Chris Young, who is coming off back-to-back No. 1 singles—”I’m Comin’ Over” and “Think of You”—he’s hoping the new single (June 6) sounds like another No. 1 song.
“I wouldn’t complain about it [hitting No.1],” Chris tells Nash Country Daily during a phone call from a Virginia tour stop. “It’s definitely a really special song. It’s different because ‘I’m Comin’ Over’ was a sexy song and ‘Think of You’ was a duet and a relationship-based song. But ‘Sober Saturday Night’ is just straight up a sad song. All three of these songs have been very different from each other. It’s something I’m glad we get a chance to put out and obviously with Vince Gill being on there, it’s just extra special to me because I’m a huge Vince Gill fan.”
Getting Vince Gill to lend his vocals to a song could be a daunting series of phone calls, emails and requests to be processed. But that wasn’t the case when Chris decided to get in touch with Vince.
“I actually just called and asked. I didn’t think that works but it does,” Chris says surprisingly. “I just asked if he wanted to be a part of the song and he’s like, ‘Sure, send it over, let me listen to it.’ The coolest part was I was like, ‘How do you want to do this? Do you want me to send you the files?’ And he goes, ‘No man, just come over to the house.’ I’m thinking, ‘Uh, OK.’ So I got to go over to Vince Gill’s house and hang out with him in his home studio.”
Had Vince not agreed to be on the record, Chris isn’t sure that he would have approached anyone else. Vince was his first choice from the start. “The harmonies that [Vince] put on there—especially the solo that he played–are just so perfect for all of that. There’s probably a million ways that we could have messed this tune up and I think everything just fell into place the way we needed it to be.”
Chris revealed to NCD that he has just finished shooting the video for the new song and can’t wait for fans to see the finished product. “This is the first time that I’m not acting in a long time. I’m normally doing that in just about every video that I’ve done, so this one is very different. We basically shot a mini-movie for this song. We spent a lot of time looking for the right actors. When the treatment came across I was like, ‘OK, this is perfect, this is exactly what I wanted.’ I think people are really going to love it.”
Fans will also love seeing Chris perform live in Las Vegas at the 2016 Miss USA Competition this Sunday (June 5) at 7 p.m. ET on FOX. “[I’m performing] ‘I’m Comin’ Over’ and there is a song on my album called ‘Heartbeat.’ We’re doing both of those and we’re kind of blending them together to do a mash-up.”
With all those beautiful ladies around, it seems like the perfect gig for a young single country star. “None of my guys are complaining,” Chris adds with a laugh. “It’s going to be fun. Being able to do a couple of my tunes and just be there and be a part of it is going to be really special.”
