Cole Swindell Gets “Serious” About His New Album and Avoiding the Sophomore Slump

Cole Swindell’s self-titled debut album in 2014 set the bar pretty high for the Georgia native. In addition to featuring four singles (“Chillin’ It,” “Hope You Get Lonely Tonight,” “Ain’t Worth the Whiskey” and “Let Me See You Girl”) that went to the top of the Billboard and/or Mediabase charts, the album was recently certified platinum for sales of 1,000,000 units by the RIAA. That’s quite a debut—and a lot to live up to with the so-called “sophomore slump” lurking in the shadows as Cole drops his new album, You Should Be Here, today (May 6).

“Where do you go after four No. 1s and a platinum album?” Cole asks rhetorically during a sit-down with Nash Country Daily. “That’s tough. But I don’t think [the new album] is about topping [my debut]. It’s just trying to get better and touch on things I haven’t touched on. Meanwhile, [I made] sure I got the best songs I could get because I’m getting to the point where there’s no sense not recording the best songs. If other writers are sending me stuff, then [I don’t] want to miss a great song because I didn’t write it. That’s not me. As a new artist, you kind of have to write all your own stuff because you’re not getting [songs from other writers]. After hearing [You Should Be Here]—I guess there’s always a chance of a slump, but I don’t think it’s going to me my fault or my producer’s fault. This album, I’ve never been more proud of anything. I know every artist says that about their next album, but I’m serious. I think this album is going to get me a little closer to where I want to be one day.”

You Should Be Here is already off to a stellar start with the sentimental title track climbing to the top of Billboard’s Country Airplay and Hot Country Songs charts. The new album also features vocals from Dierks Bentley on “Flatliner,” as well as a bevy of top songwriters, including Ashley Gorley, Ben Hayslip and Matt Dragstem.

Now it’s a question of how much higher Cole can raise the bar.
